A fun week – and I did some writing too!
I haven’t checked the total word count for the week but it shouldn’t be too bad. Lots of other news for the week and all good. And the Granny’s were great!
I met two author’s (well, three actually) at the local library last week.
I met Kelsey Browning and Nancy Naigle who are co-authoring The Granny Series. They had a book signing and question and answer meeting at the South Milwaukee Library during their multi-state tour dropping off books at Little Libraries. I almost didn’t go but my wife said I should go ahead. I had a great time!
They describe the Granny books as the Golden Girls meet Dirty Harry. I think they are in the cozy mystery genre. I have not had time to do much more than skim through the two I bought yet. I am looking forward to reading them.
The best part was the Q&A
Just a few minutes into the Q&A, Barbara Vey (the third author I met there) who seems to have organized the event, asked if there were any authors or prospective authors who had questions. I seemed to be the only one raising my hand (very slowly). So, not only was I forced to actually ask a question in public, every time they answered a writing or publishing type of question, they seemed to be looking at me.
Kelsey told about her five year ordeal to get her first book published. At times she thought she was not a good writer. At times, other people told her she was not a good writer. I will never forget when she looked at me and said “Don’t drink the Kool-Aid.” Don’t let anyone convince you, you can’t write. Nancy was just as encouraging.
I have no idea how I got the notification about the meeting.
I got some reading done this week.
I finally finished Orson Scott Card’s Character and Viewpoint. Awesome book on just writing in general as well as characters.
I am still working on Bob Mayer’s NaNoWriMo Survival Kit. This three book combination so far has exceeded my expectations as a resource on writing. It’s just so huge. Right now it has my primary reading focus.
However, when reading to relax, I am still working on Power Games by Richard A Peters. I am still amazed that I have never heard of this author before. This book is really good so far.
In the car, I’m listening to Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Blood Trinity.
I am coming to realize that while I need to read more books, I need to be writing pretty much all the time I spend in front of my computer for the next few years.
I need to produce more content and not consume it. Less social media. More blogging. Less blogs. I need to read those books and post my reviews (not that they really matter) here. Lots of cool stuff to know and learn (even about writing) on the internet but not as important as writing myself.
As for writing – this week’s manuscript report
Last week I posted 67157 total words so far. It’s at 72672 total words. That’s 5515 for the week of April 28.
O.K., so maybe not that much for the week. I feel good about it because I did write every day I could. Last Tuesday it was late when I finish the blog post. Wednesday I was at the library. Those are allowable excuses to me.
I could have done more writing on Saturday and Sunday. I spent too much time trying to find a CD by this singer (video is from the Chinese version of American Idol). Her name is Yunggiema.
This week more writing, less internet.
