It’s been a long time since my last post. I’ve been busy writing and I wrote – a lot.
I won the July 2015 Camp NaNoWriMo.
I set a goal of 50000 words. I posted an official count this morning (July 31) of 51258 words and validated it. This is something I would have thought I could do a year ago.
What is Camp NaNoWriMo?
NaNoWriMo is short for National Novel Writing Month. It is a challenge to writers to write a 50000 word novel during the month of November when it is held. Camp NaNoWriMo is now held in April and July. Camp is similar but you can set your own word total goal. I set mine for 50K to see if I could do it. It was a realistic challenge for myself although I felt it was within my current capabilities.
I will probably try for a higher goal at the next Camp in April. I doubt it would be anything like the 150K Stacy Claflin did last April but it will be more than 50K. I hope to get to the point that 50K words a month is typical for me.
Things I learned during Camp.
- I can write this much in one month.
- I didn’t “burn out.”
- I feel the story is just as good as if I had done it slower.
- It’s fun.
Things that helped me reach the goal.
- Having a group of people I reported my progress to.
- I read several book on increasing writing speed the month before and applied much of it.
- Ignoring my desire to edit the work as I write.
- Meeting the local NaNoWriMo writing group.
- Keeping track of my hourly speed on a spreadsheet.
What did I write?
I started a new book for Camp. I am very excited about it – still. It’s a fantasy of some type – I’m not really sure exactly where it fits in the genre. I figure it’s about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way finished with the first draft.
This will be the first book of a series. The next book I work on will be a prequel that will be free to my readers. then I’ll continue the series.
I am so excited about the book. It took me a long time to come up with an idea that I felt I could expand and dive into. I think I found it and am looking forward to telling the story of my main character as well as many of the other characters. And I am really excited about some of them.
I need to thank my wife who has been extremely supportive of me. She is the most important key to any success I have.
